How to Reuse Twist Ties Around Your Home

July 7, 2021 • Alyssa Sobotka, Digital Content Specialist

How to Reuse Twist Ties Around Your Home

Considering the many uses of twist ties, odds are there are multiple in your home right now. In a matter of seconds you could likely locate various colored twist ties and lengths. At the very least, you could find one around a bread bag.

Whether you call them twist ties, wire ties, plastic ties, or even twistee ties, these common packaging closures are perfect for many reuses around the home.

A twist tie is a metal wire encased in all plastic, all paper, or a combination of paper and plastic and can be various lengths, colors, and thickness.

Still not sure what to do with twist ties? Below are some twist tie reuses around the home.

Cord Ties

One could argue (and we would) that the most common reuse is around power cords and cables. Practically every room in the average home has an electrical cord feeding energy to our gadgets and gizmos, making it easy for them to become an unruly mess. Twist ties regain order to that mass behind your television, in your office, or even that drawer of cords you’re sure would be a crime to ditch (guilty)!

Bread ties will do the trick, but even better for the job are the industrial strength twist ties – the all plastic ties often found around cords in home appliance or hardware purchases. These heavy duty twist ties offer a strong hold without the nuisance of cutting and destroying them when you need to readjust, which is most often the case if you used cable ties, zip ties, or tie wraps.

Travel

Reuse a twist tie to keep your corded items from tangling while traveling.

Charging cords are one of those things that can be hard to remember to pack, but impossible to ignore if you do, as it doesn’t take long before they become one big cord jungle in our checked luggage, carry-on, or personal bag. Much like organizing cords and cables around your home, twist ties can be tied around corded items like phone and laptop chargers, earbuds, and hair-styling appliances.

They also have a purpose on the outside of your suitcase. Tie your checked bags’ zippers together to prevent them from pulling apart during transit. An added perk to this trick will make for instant identification in the sea of bags traveling down the baggage return.

Take the 'Junk' out of "Junk Drawer"

It’s ironic that many office organization solutions are some of the most disorganized articles in a desk. Small solutions like paper clips, binder clips, and rubber bands can quickly become scattered clutter at the bottom of drawers. These items have a distinct purpose, but it’s the view of disorganized clutter that results in the “junk” drawer title.

Reusable twist ties make regaining order simple.

Try applying around these common items in your “junk” drawers:

  • Paper clips
  • Binder clips
  • Rubber bands
  • Rolls of tape
  • Pencils/pens/highlighters
  • Hair ties

Holiday

You’ll never regret your stockpile of twist ties when Christmas rolls around. They make quick work out of hanging stockings, wreaths, and garland; securing holiday lights to a tree or fence posts; hanging ornaments and securing bows to the tree; and storing rolls of wrapping paper.

They even come in handy when it’s time to put the decorations away until next year!

Lawn and Garden

You may be surprised at the value twist ties bring to the garden! Garden twist ties are ideal for helping train young vining plants up a trellis – think cucumbers, peas, flowering vines, and more! They’re also great for securing tomato stems to a stake for extra stability or tying cauliflower leaves around its head to prevent it from receiving too much sun. Choose green twist ties to get all the benefits of this trick without seeing it.

You can also use a variety of twist tie colors to help stay organized. Assign a color to any number of distinctions, such as plant maturity or variety. Keep a legend in a notebook to record all your color distinctions.

Besides being used for plants, they can also keep your garden shed or garage organized by securing bags of fertilizer, potting soil, or bagged mulch.

Other Ways to Reuse Twist Ties

  • Tie up trash bags
  • Key ring organization
  • Close cereal and chip bags
  • Fix a zipper or eyeglasses in a pinch
  • Tie measuring cups or spoons together
  • Single hole punch an index card and thread through for a twist tie label
